Tum illa: “Meministisne,” inquit, “mē quondam vōbīs multa nārrāre quōdam dē Moyse, quī gentem meam servitūte līberāvit et ex Aegyptō ēdūxit in fīnēs maiōribus nostrīs ā deō dēstinātōs?”

“Haec omnia memoriā tenēmus,” inquit Sextus. “Perge porrō dīcere.”

“Ex eō tempore,” inquit Anna, “quō Moysēs nātus est, rēx eārum regiōnum ēdictum prōposuerat ut[3] puerī īnfantēs gentis nostrae occīderentur omnēs. Nam in diēs[4] crēscēbat multitūdō, ac metuēbat rēx nē quandō populus, quem servitūte premēbat, sēditiōnem commovēret et summā[5] rērum potīrētur.

“Moysem autem īnfantem māter domī trēs mēnsēs occultāvit. Tum alveō factō imposuit puerum, atque inter harundinēs prope flūminis rīpam abscondit. Interim soror puerī haud procul ēventum exspectābat.

“Paulō post ad lavandum rēgis fīlia flūmen adiit; dumque ancillae in rīpā vagantur, alveum animadvertit. Quō apertō, rēgia virgō, cum īnfantem flentem vīdisset, misericordiā mōta: ‘Hic est,’ inquit, ‘ūnus dē īnfantibus proscrīptīs.’[6]
